IP Addressing

Each host on a TCP/IP network is assigned a 32 bit logical address that is divided into two main parts:
1) network number
2) host number
The network number identifies a network and must be assigned by InterNIC (or whoever does it these days).
The host number identifies a host on a network and is assigned by a local network administrator.
The IP address itself is grouped in eight bits at a time, known as octets. These eight bits are separated by dots and represented in a decimal format known as dotted decimal notation.
Example: 192.168.1.1
